Take Action

The Florida Mentoring Toolkit and Blueprint for Success has been developed to assist local mentoring programs Teecy.Matthews@VolunteerUSAFund.org.

Encourage your local leaders to be CHAMPIONS for MENTORING

Nothing more important exists to the success of mentoring than getting leaders involved. Great mentors are naturally great leaders, and we’ve got some super examples. Take Tallahassee attorney Steve Uhlfelder. Steve has mentored for the past 25 years and played a critical role in establishing the Governor's Mentoring Initiative. Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush says Steve acted as his mentor for mentoring. He co-chaired the new statewide initiative with a goal to recruit 200,000 caring adults who would commit an hour a week to mentoring a child.Steve still advocates for mentoring by serving as co-chair of the Florida Mentoring Partnership Advocacy Council.

Talking about leaders who mentor, we know from experience that a Mentoring Advocacy Council can have a huge impact on local mentoring programs. Invite local leaders to join your advocacy council. Think big. This council should support all types of mentoring in your community. We think our Mentoring Advocacy Council has been really innovative, but we’d also love to hear about yours.

TAKE ACTION LOCALLY TO SUPPORT CURRENT MENTORING ISSUES

After establishing the Governor’s Mentoring Initiative, former Governor Jeb Bush enacted that state employees could take one hour a week of paid leave away from their jobs to mentor a student. Following suit, a significant number of local municipalities and business around the state also provide their workers the same opportunity to take paid leave away from their jobs. Look into your organization and see if it provides the same opportunity. If it doesn’t, encourage your superior to be a champion for mentoring and establish a new company statute.
